3-year-old recites poem, "Litany" by Billy Collins

Thank author of this post/commentThis is my 3-year-old son. He loves poetry and he loves to memorize. Here he is reciting a poem called "Litany" by Billy Collins. Here is the text: "You are the bread and the knife, the crystal goblet and the wine. You are the dew on the morning grass and the burning wheel of the sun. You are the white apron of the baker, and the marsh birds suddenly in flight. However, you are not the wind in the orchard, the plums on the counter, or the house of cards. And you are certainly not the pine-scented air. There is just no way that you are the pine-scented air. It is possible that you are the fish under the bridge, maybe even the pigeon on the general's head, but you are not even close to being the field of cornflowers at dusk. And a quick look in the mirror will show that you are neither the boots in the corner nor the boat asleep in its boathouse. It might interest you to know, speaking of the plentiful imagery of the world, that I am the sound of rain on the roof. I also happen to be the shooting star, the evening paper blowing down an alley and the basket of chestnuts on the kitchen table. I am also the moon in the trees and the blind woman's tea cup. But don't worry, I'm not the bread and the knife. You are still the bread and the knife. You will always be the bread and the knife, not to mention the crystal goblet and--somehow--the wine."

My one-and-a-half year old niece also knows how to recite poems, that is of our native language. It is also of the culture and religious beliefs through poems passed from generations through generations.

As what i have known, litanies are a series of petitions, particularly used for church services and usually recited by the clergy and responded to in a recurring formula by the churchgoers.

It is but unusual and prodigious for a three-year-old child to recite a litany, I hope the essence of the verses are also memorized by the child, as if it were the back of his hands. It is more inspiring if the properties of each word are being taught to each child.

The poem Litany by Billy Collins plays with words so as to express her unfathomable feeling of being filled after being empty.

Let us hope more children develop in such manner.

Words really are

Wow this little kid is so impressive knowing that he could recite the poem "Litany" at the age of three. I wonder how long he has memorized it. He is one of a kind. Well it is really nice to teach kids such long poems. However, are the meanings of each line explained to them well? Do they really understand what they are talking?

I think it should be explained well before reciting so they can express it well.

Thanks for posting the video of your son here. I really liked how he recite that poem. I find kids like your son very cute. It is not easy for any kid of that age to recite poems easily. I hope that you can still post here some good videos of your son reciting some other poems. Thanks a lot and have a great day ahead to all of you.

Hi there!

Wow! This is really amazing. Thanks a lot for posting this video. He is just so adorable. It makes me think that when I have my own kid I'll have him or her memorize that poem, too. Simply adorable. I know it wasn't easy for him to memorize it, but he just did.

Thank you so much and have a great day to all of you guys!
